Shipping Container Project, Glasgow
We were approached by the client on this one to carry out a detailed structural feasibility study for a new five-storey modular building comprising standard stacked ISO shipping containers as an alternative to 'standard' forms of construction. Shipping containers are highly robust structures in their own right - until openings are made in them - this project had lots of these! We therefore carried out finite element analysis of individual containers and the building as a whole to determine the distribution of stresses and magnitude of displacements throughout. This allowed us to determine and detail what structural strengthening was required to accommodate the architectural layouts which the client could subsequently factor into their cost plan.
