Services & Capability
Structural Engineering Design
Our core business is to provide structural engineering design services. We develop initial design concepts based on experience and approximate methodologies, turning these ideas into detailed, cost-effective design as the project emerges.
Design Engineering Workshop is an Approved Body under the SER scheme in Scotland and provide SER Certificates as a matter of course on most of our projects. Mark is our in-house Approved Certifier.
We are not a niche consultancy by any means but do offer some key specialisms as noted:
Bespoke, one-off architectural houses and extensions
Finite element analysis for challenging structures including buildings and artwork installations
Structural design of buildings to achieve Passivhaus standards
Design of cross-laminated timber (CLT) structures
Design of glue-laminated timber structures
BIM & Computer Modelling
We have invested significantly in computer hardware and software to allow us to offer our clients the best technology available within the industry.
We work with the latest Microsoft Surface Studio Laptops powering dual monitors.
Our analysis and design software arsenal includes SCIA Engineer, Tekla Structural Designer, Masterseries and Tedds.
Our primary drawing and detailing package is Revit, where a 3D model is developed for each project. Drawing output is then created from the 3D model.
Civil Engineering Design
We offer civil engineering design, which is often required as part of the wider site works for the buildings we work on. This encompasses drainage & SuDS design, hardstanding build-ups, retaining wall design and cut & fill to name a few.
Civil engineering design includes liaison with statutory bodies including the local authority as the flooding authority/ LLFA, SEPA/ EA, Scottish Water/ various other statutory water undertakers and local authority roads’ departments.
We use Causeway Live Design for earthworks and roads and Causeway Flow for detailed drainage & SuDS design.
Structural Surveys
We offer structural surveying services for commercial and industrial properties, which can be required for many reasons including loading assessments for change of use and structural condition assessments, or can be required as part of a client’s due diligence on potential building purchases.
Our survey services also extend to buildings with a heritage or conservation interest where we call on the expertise of our wider collaborator network.
